About Mikhail “Misha” Alperin
Mikhail “Misha” Alperin was a Ukrainian-born, Soviet-Norwegian jazz pianist and composer, and a founding member of the Moscow Art Trio. He blended Eastern European folk music, classical training and jazz improvisation, and his recordings for ECM brought that sound to listeners around the world.

This framed cover is Wave of Sorrow (ECM, 1990), a duo album by Misha Alperin and brass player Arkady Shilkloper, recorded in July 1989. Alperin’s piano and melodica meet Shilkloper’s French horn and flugelhorn on ten Alperin originals full of Slavic folk melody. It was one of the first ECM records by Soviet musicians, and despite its title it’s warm, lyrical and often playful.
